Frequently Asked Questions

Is the placement test really free?+

Yes, always. Creating an account, taking the full adaptive placement test, seeing your NumberSmith level and skill breakdown, choosing competitions, and getting a personalized training plan are all free forever.

How is this different from just doing past papers?+

Past papers tell you your score. NumberSmith tells you what to do next. Every problem you solve updates your topic mastery, rating, and training plan — so the platform always has an answer to 'what should I practice today?'

Do I need AI for this to work?+

No. The placement test, scoring, rating, adaptive training engine, statistics, problem database, simulations, and study planner are all fully deterministic. AI tutoring is planned as an optional future Pro add-on, never a requirement.

Where do the problems come from?+

Every problem is written specifically for NumberSmith, with its source and license recorded as data rather than assumed. We do not scrape copyrighted competition archives. Every answer key is also checked by an automated verifier that re-solves each problem from scratch and never reads the stored answer — see the About page for how that works.

What ages is this for?+

Elementary through high school. Tracks span Math Kangaroo and MOEMS for younger students, MathCounts and AMC 8 for middle school, AMC 10/12 and AIME for high school, and USAMO/IMO-level material for olympiad students.
